Back at work for the rest of the week, Rowan did his best to push aside all thoughts of Seth. But when he was alone, or bored, or dropping off to sleep at night, or feeling horny, Seth crept into his mind like smoke from a campfire. He curled into Rowan’s consciousness and Rowan kept remembering his smile and his deep voice, his raw sexiness, and the chemistry they’d had. He thought of the way Seth had grinned when Rowan had suggested seeing each other again. He’d seemed genuinely excited about the idea.

Maybe Rowan should try a little harder to find him.

A few times he visited the Odd Morris Facebook page again and looked wistfully at Seth’s photo. He was doing that on Thursday evening at the kitchen table when Max came in quietly without Rowan noticing.

“You can’t stay away can you?” Max’s voice made Rowan jump out of his skin.

He slammed his laptop shut as though he’d been caught looking at porn rather than some innocent photos of morris dancers. “Fuck off, I was just….” Rowan’s voice trailed off, because it was pretty obvious what he’d been doing.

Max sat opposite him grinning, but there was sympathy in his expression too. “He got to you didn’t he?”

Rowan shrugged. “It’s stupid. It was only one night. I need to forget about him.”

“But you can’t?”

“Not yet. I dunno why. It’s hard to explain but I just thought there was something there. Some spark, a connection that went a little deeper than sex.”

“I know what you mean, I’ve had that before and it’s hard to let go of when you thought there was potential. We’ve all had those guys. The ones that got away. But you could still try to find him. What if he’s out there thinking the same as you?”

“No. He’s probably forgotten all about me already.” It was so tempting to try again, to message one of the other dancers, or to do something crazy like turn up at one of their practice sessions—which were every Wednesday evening in a church hall on the other side of town, and the fact that Rowan knew this was worrying. But no. It would be too humiliating to risk that and then have to deal with the awkwardness if Seth really didn’t want anything to do with him. “I’m done. I’ll stop mooning over him and move on.” Rowan picked up his phone and opened Grindr. “I can do this. Look at me moving on. There’s some guy who’s been messaging me asking for a date; I’ll see if he’s still interested.”
